How is paper recycled

2023-04-13

Paper recycling allows us to save energy and resources. According to the EPA, we save 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water and 463 gallons of oil by recycling one ton of paper.
How is paper recycled?
After the paper is placed in the recycling bin, it is taken to a recycling center where contaminants such as plastic, glass or trash are removed.
Next, the paper is sorted into different grades.
After the paper is sorted, it is stored in bundles until the factory needs it, and then it is transferred to the factory for processing.
Once in the mill, large machines (pulpers) shred the paper into smaller pieces. This mixture of paper, water and chemicals is heated and the sheets break down into fibers.
Press the mixture through a screen to remove binders and other residual contaminants.
Next, the paper is spun through conical cylinders to clean and sometimes remove ink. At this point, the pulp passes through a machine that sprays it onto a conveyor belt. Water will drip from the conveyor belt screen and the paper fibers will start to stick together.
Heated metal rollers dry the paper, which is then placed on large rolls that can be made into new paper products.
